How To Get To Glentress

Peebles in the Scottish Borders is around 40km south of the city of Edinburgh. Glentress forest lies on the A72, 3.5km to the east of Peebles. The trail head is beside the turn off into the forest from the A72.

By Car

Using SatNav or GPS?

Use postcode EH45 8NB to reach Glentress, then follow signs for the trail head.

From Edinburgh & Peebles

Join the A703 to Peebles just south of the Edinburgh City Bypass (A720). Note that the road becomes the A701 between Penicuik and Leadburn, but reverts to being the A703 from Leadburn to Peebles. At Peebles, take a left at the roundabout where the A703 meets the A72. Follow the A72 east towards Innerleithen. Glentress is signposted, with the 7stanes trails signposted a little further on. Follow the road for around 3.5km. The entrance to Glentress is on the left.

From Dumfries

Take the A701 towards Moffat. Continue through Moffat and join the B712 (signposted for Stobo). Follow the B712 to the A72 and turn right onto the A72 towards Peebles. Continue through Peebles town centre on the A72 and, at the roundabout where the A72 meets the A703, go straight on. Glentress is signposted, with the 7stanes trails signposted a little further on. Follow the road for around 3.5km. The entrance to Glentress is on the left.

From Glasgow

Head east on the M8, then turn off at Newhouse to take the A73 via Carluke to Lanark. From Lanark, take the A721 / A72 via Carnwath to Peebles. Continue through Peebles town centre on the A72 and, at the roundabout where the A72 meets the A73, go straight on. Glentress is signposted, with the 7stanes trails signposted a little further on. Follow the road for around 3.5km. The entrance to Glentress is on the left.

From Carlisle

Take the A74(M) to junction 15 (Beattock) and turn onto the A701 through Moffat. Continue through Moffat and join the B712 (signposted for Stobo). Follow the B712 to the A72 and turn right onto the A72 towards Peebles. Continue through Peebles town centre on the A72 and, at the roundabout where the A72 meets the A703, go straight on. Glentress is signposted, with the 7stanes trails signposted a little further on. Follow the road for around 3.5km. The entrance to Glentress is on the left.

From Newcastle

Follow the A696 and then the A68 through Jedburgh. Just past Newton St Boswells, turn left onto the A6091 through Melrose. The road becomes the A72 just by Galashiels. Follow the A72 through Innerleithen. Glentress is 7km further on, entrance on the right.

By Public Transport (Train)

The closest stations are at Carstairs and Edinburgh, from where there are bus connections to Peebles and connections to regional and national cycle networks (see by bike, above). Both are roughly 45km from Glentress.

Services to Carstairs are provided by First Scotrail and Virgin Trains. They also provide services to Edinburgh, along with National Express East Coast.

By Public Transport (Bus)

First Edinburgh service 62 runs daily from Edinburgh to Melrose, and stops at the entrance to Glentress forest shortly after Peebles. Please note that bikes currently cannot be carried on this service.

There are no direct services from Glasgow, Carlisle, or Newcastle, however, connections from Newcastle and Glasgow can be made in Edinburgh, and there is a connection to Peebles from Galashiels if travelling from Carlisle.

By Air

The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Edinburgh, roughly 40km from Peebles. Car hire is available at the airport and regular bus connections to Glentress via Peebles are available from Edinburgh city centre.

By Bike

National Cycle Route 1 runs through Innerleithen, about 7km from the trail head at Glentress. Innerleithen is around 45km from Edinburgh.

The Peebles link provides an off-road link directly into the forest, starting behind Peebles Hydro Hotel.

There is a signposted regional cycling route to Peebles via Biggar, Broughton and Stobo (approx 45km) if arriving by train at Carstairs.

Parking

Glentress has several parking options. The trail head is at Glentress Peel visitor centre. 
 

Car Parking Charges:

 £2 for 1 hour perfect if you’re stopping off for some food and refreshments in the café.
 £5 per day (or £3.50 for 3 hours). This applies to all car parks at this location Glentress Peel (over 100 spaces), Falla Brae, Buzzards Nest and our two overflow car parks.
You can pay car park charges by credit or debit card (with chip and pin) in the two Glentress Peel car parks and the Buzzard's Nest car park.  If you prefer to pay by cash the machines accept all denomination coins but do not accept notes.

Forest Park Gateway building (toilets, showers & changing) at Glentress Peel: Open 9am - 6pm Daily. Showers cost £1 for 5 minutes
